Some attorneys state they “specialize in family law”, however, that is very different than a Certified Specialist in Family Law. The certified specialist must fulfill the California State Bar mandated requirements of required years of practice as an attorney before they can even apply. Requirements include lengthy hours of additional study to prepare for the required rigorous examination to demonstrate a high level of competency and skill in family law. It requires requisite experience and specified matters in family law. This includes a peer review by other certified specialists and judicial officers. Once the certification is conferred the specialization requires ongoing and additional mandatory education to remain in good standing.
